Depending on the project you are trying to handle or the amount of wood you need to make the plan. Let’s choose the wood planer that suits you.

For example, if you want to do some household chores simply because you love furniture or to impress your wife or friends. So a handheld planer is your best option in this case.

On the other hand, if you often work with large quantities of lumber that need to plan. After that, a portable wood planer cannot handle the job. A stationary or heavy wood planer will be your best option.

Heavy-duty wood planer

As the name implies, these planers are used for large production jobs. They come with more than 3 horse engines and can chew hardwood quickly at any depth of cut.

Feature

Whether the performance of the planing machine is high or not depends greatly on the quality of the cutting head. Therefore, it becomes one of the most important parts of a wood planer.

Realizing that, the blade of this machine is made from stress-resistant steel, which means you can plan all materials most simply and gently. The spiral cutter is made up of 74 carbide particles arranged in rows of spirals, thus creating excellent efficiency and quality in cuts.

Another impressive feature of this type of wood planer is the powerful engine turning the cutter head that can run continuously and provide endless energy to withstand all throws at it.

Benchtop Wood Planers

If you only need a wood planer for your home workshop, then a benchtop planer may be the type of wood planer you need.

In contrast to heavy planing machines that can chew hardwood at a much faster rate, benchtop wood planers require more planing times to achieve the same effect.

However, there are many reasons why you should consider buying a benchtop planer.

First of all, about the price. A heavy wood planer can set you back as high as $ 7000 and as low as $ 2,000. For a home-only user, this may be too much. Meanwhile, the prices of some of the best benchtop planers range from $ 300 to $ 600 much cheaper than heavy planers.

Second, the planers of this type are quite compact and lightweight. You can transport to anywhere you want easily. Moreover, benchtop wood planers can help you save working space as well. This is probably one of the most common reasons why people choose to buy benchtop planer today.

Hand Wood Planers

Handheld planers are a very common wood planer you can find in most workshops. They are not heavy and are easy to carry around, allowing them to be used both inside and outside the workshop.

They are mainly used for small planning jobs. There are two types of handheld wood planers: Electric hand planer and manual planer

Electric hand planers need electricity to operate and they are divided into wired and wireless wood planers. And Manual wood planers do not need electricity to run. You control them with your arm muscles.

Corded Wood Planers

The corded wood planer has many advanced features:

This planer comes with a very powerful motor, providing smoothness and even finishing in any type of wood, regardless of hardness. It has a maximum cutting rate of 3 inches at a time, which helps to reduce the number of planing per material.

Moreover, With this planer, there is no need to regain the depth of the material when planning because it has a depth adjustment knob calibrated to set the correct depth.

For safety, it has a side-release lock button that prevents accidental startup and a lock button in case you plan to use it for a long time without turning off.

Lastly, It comes with spring support that lifts it and protects the blade and resting point on the material being worked.

Cordless Wood Planers

The handle of this planer has a soft handle that improves comfort and reduces fatigue when working with it.

And, It has a remaining battery indicator which helps inform the user when the remaining time runs out.

Besides, The planer also has a cradle mounted on the side to prevent the blade from accidentally contacting the user when not in use.

In conclusion

Apart from the above, there are a few types of wood planer that I do not mention as the best thickness planer.

There are different wood planers for diverse types of jobs. Let’s choose the best wood planer that fits the project you decide to use. And follow your budget. Finally, hope the article is helpful for you and thank you for reading.

Custom Digital Silhouettes

Traditionally silhouettes were a form or portraiture, cut from thin black card, originating in the 18th century. They are a lovely way to freeze a moment and time, and of course, work best when the subject is in profile, so you can identify their defining features. I made this digital version last week for my husband, and he was rather chuffed with it, I think it’s going into the office with him for his desk. I think these would work well with a nice white matte and a thin black or white gallery-style frame. Getting the outline right takes some patience, you have to make sure the image is suitable and work out beforehand how many colors you are using before you start the outline. The benefit of digital, of course, is the colors can be matched to your decor, or changed completely in a flash. If you fancy one of these for your home, or as a gift this Christmas, just drop me an email and we can get it all sorted in a jiffy. I loved creating this artwork and would love to make some more.

How it works:
  • You send me a photo to digitally create your silhouette from,  faces need to be in profile for best results. Quality not a major issue, but needs to be good enough to get a good outline from. Stray wisps of hair and things just add to the charm. Email image or images to [email protected] before you buy so I can make sure your image is ok.
  • Once we are all happy I can create what you want from your image, you need to buy your print using the Paypal button at the bottom of this post.
  • I create the silhouette and email you a preview image, in your colors if you have specified them, or I will use creative judgment. A title can be added if you like, the print looks smarter with one.  Color tweaks can be made at this point.
  • Final print option A) I send you a high-resolution image for you to print yourself. I will provide an A4 300dpi version for home printing and an 8″x10″ version for printing with a photographic service such as Snapfish. Cost for this service is £20 (Please make sure your email account is able to accept large files, I can also post to Flickr if this causes a problem, but it’s more complicated)
  • Final print option B) I print your image on my high-quality home printer on A4 glossy premium paper and post it to you. Cost for this service is £25 (the extra covers printing and postage costs)
  • How long does this take? I will estimate a delivery date when you first email me your pictures, but these can be turned around in a few days.

However you buy, your final print will be designed to fit in a frame with an aperture suitable for a 10″x8″ (20x25cm) photo. The diagram below explains how big your print will be and how it will look mounted under a suitable aperture mount (clicky for larger image). You can buy mounts like this online, with or without a matching frame. I buy my mounts and frames at Habitat, Ikea also do a suitable frame with mount included for just £3.99.
